👋🏾 Salaam, we are Somalis in Tech and welcome to our monthly newsletter. Each month we’ll bring you the latest from the community, tech news, a close up of a member and we might drop a mah-mah (proverb) that’ll get you pondering.
So why a newsletter?
Quite a few members of the community have suggested that we start a newsletter as a way of keeping track of what's happening in the community. As you might’ve noticed, Slack has become the main home for the SiT community. You’ll often find a lot of meaningful conversations happening there. It’s also a place where people regularly share opportunities and knowledge. It’s easy to miss the good stuff, especially when life is busy. For this reason, we’ll use the Newsletter to round up some of those conversations and opportunities you may have missed!
What can you expect?
The newsletter will be a place for you to hear about upcoming events, job opportunities, a close up of a person or project in the community. We’ll also be humbly answering subject-specific questions directly from you. If we can’t answer it, we’ll find an expert who can offer their take. Send us your questions by filling in this form.
The goal behind this is to continuously provide value to you as the reader and to keep things fresh (who wants to read the same thing over and over again right?). As always, we’re willing to shake things up, and take on board your feedback. We want this newsletter to reflect the needs of the community (if you ever feel that it doesn’t - let us know).
Upcoming events
On the 5th September we’ll be exploring our next event Tech Back Home! We’ll be joined by an exciting lineup of speakers!
Ayaan Khalif, Co-founder of Digital Shelter;
Shaks Shidane, Co-founder of Bixi;
Mukhtar Hakaale, Head of Software Development at the Somtel Group.
We’ll be streaming live on Zoom and our YouTube channel. You can grab your ticket(s) via Eventbrite. Looking forward to seeing you all there!
And if that’s not enough, on the 22nd of September at 7pm BST we’ll be starting a new series titled Sit down with SiT featuring a special guest to be announced soon, so stay tuned for that.
